Vlasta Zenia “Val” (Lawson) Orwig was born in the family home in Three Sands, Oklahoma on September 12, 1925. She was the firstborn child of Zenia and Jennie (Vincencie Petr) Lawson. She had two younger sisters. She also had a baby brother and baby sister that died at birth.
After graduating from high school, she moved to Blackwell, Ok. And worked in the Kerr glass plant making canning jars. After a tornado destroyed the plant she moved to Tulsa where she worked as a telephone operator.
She met and married Curtis Cleve Orwig Sr. through some friends, Dale and Norma Harvey, and were married on March 17, 1948. She was born again in Christ on Friday, October 27, 1961. Her faith and trust in God transformed her life. A little later she joined the Sheridan Assembly of God church, which, was later changed to Sheridan Christian Center and is now called Sheridan Church.
Her faith and trust in Christ was not a stagnant religious idea, but an active and vibrant, living faith! She wanted all other people to “know” God in a real way. She was active in telling others about their need of a Savior, Who is Jesus Christ The Lord! Her life consisted of more than just “telling” others. She put feet to her work for the Lord. She was very instrumental in getting her neighbor and best friend, Helen Belden and her husband Robert to attend church with her. They soon became Christians and were faithful in their church. In the later years of Robert’s life, he and Helen took her to church when it became difficult for her to get around. She was an avid reader of the Bible and sought to live by every word she read in the Bible.
She was the “Oswego Ave. Field” missionary. She helped all of the neighbors on the street that had needs. There were many who did not have cars and she made herself available to drive people to different places. Many of these people were struggling with drug addictions and other things. She never judged them, but reached out to them. She consistently shared the “Light” of God’s love and grace. She was a living example to all, whether her own family or strangers.
She was encouraged to attend her church, Sheridan Assembly of God, by another good friend, Betty Bristow. Then she began to encourage others and even “take” others to church. Her desire was to help others come to Christ. She encouraged them to live the new life that God gives.
If she were here today, she would encourage you to know God through Christ and live the new life as a living testament to the Gospel and take the light of Christ to others. In truth and in reality, this is the mandate of The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
She is survived by: four sons – Curtis Orwig Jr. and wife Pam of Nampa, ID; Dennis Orwig (Josie May) of Hulbert, Oklahoma; Lester Orwig and wife Paula of Talala, Oklahoma, David Orwig and wife Bedea of Tulsa, Oklahoma and two daughters-in-law Kim Orwig of Tulsa and Claudia Cloud of the home. Also, two nephews, Marty Moon and wife Lisa of Lakeland, Florida, and John Moon Jr. and wife Christy of Claremore, Oklahoma. 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
