Nancy Joan Johnson of Broken Arrow, 89, died peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2020. She was born to Maude and Harry Lavender, in Stamford, Texas on October 2, 1931. Nancy married Herman Johnson, from Beamsville Ontario Canada, in Stamford, Texas on August 26, 1954. They were married for 59 years.
Nancy attend grades 1-12 in the Stamford school system and graduated from Stamford High in 1949. She continued her education at Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) and graduated in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in Business. Nancy taught business classes at Great Lakes Christian College in Beamsville, Ontario Canada where she and Herman met. Nancy also taught at the high schools in Ropesville, Texas and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma until she retired in 1993.
Nancy was a wife, mother, teacher, and proud “Granny”. She was blessed to be a stay-at-home mother while her kids were young but as their college years drew closer Nancy went back to school at Northeastern State University to earn her master’s degree and then returned to the classroom at Broken Arrow High School.
Nancy and Herman were eventually blessed with four grandchildren and she loved making snickerdoodle cookies, reading stories to them, having them all together for sleepovers, swimming parties, and allowing them to “play” her piano. Nancy also enjoyed quilting, tole painting, crocheting, and knitting. Nancy and Herman were a team and worked together to make things for their home, working in their yard and they enjoyed traveling.
Nancy found time to work as a volunteer at the Broken Arrow Hospital, teach Ladies Bible class, and team teach the high school girls’ Wednesday night Bible class at the Broken Arrow Church of Christ. She was instrumental in starting a Ladies Bible Class yearly project known as the “Piggybank Shower” where the ladies in the class would raise funds to be given to the Westview Boy’s Home so that the boys could purchase and raise a pig for their yearly project. In addition to her volunteer work, she found time to do some writing and had an article published in the Christian Woman Magazine.
Nancy is survived by her children, Caren Mims and husband Scott of Midland Texas, and Brant Johnson of Collinsville, Oklahoma; brother Ted Lavender of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Leah Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Brent Mims and Carri Mims. Nancy was proceeded in death by her husband Herman and her parents.
Due to COVID concerns, there will be a private, family graveside service. The family suggests donations be made to the “Piggybank Shower” in care of the Broken Arrow Church of Christ, 505 E. Kenosha St., Broken Arrow, Oklahoma 74012.
Arrangements are under the direction of Collinsville Dolton Funeral Home.
