Louise Hamil, 75, of Oologah, OK passed away, November 10, 2021 in Oologah. She was born October 29, 1946 in Catoosa, OK to Albert Danderson and the former Inez Stanford. She married Roderick Stephen Hamil on June 22, 1968, in 2019 the celebrated 51 years of marriage.
The following was written by Louise:
Our family story begins with me being one of eleven children of Albert Danderson and Ines (Stanford) Danderson. I’m one of eight girls. When I was ten or eleven, I started working at Cotton’s Restaurant. I washed pots and pans, and I worked the potato peeler machine. I was too small to pick up the pan that the potato peelings were in, so my cousin Cecil would throw them away for me.
When I was 13 and 14, I started to carhop, and I was good.
I married at the young age of fifteen and had one of my four children at the age of sixteen. I met Rod at Parkey’s restaurant, our first date was an indoor rodeo. Rod was adamant about us getting married. After I refused a couple of times we finally got married on June 22 nd , 1968, which was about three months after we met.
It was tradition at Cotton’s that when you got married the groom was supposed to wheel the bride around the building in a wheelbarrow. Rod participated and it was a funny sight.
Rod was an only child and was overwhelmed at holidays at the Danderson’s. After we married, we purchased a mobile home and had purchased a lot at Camino Villa in Broken Arrow. We moved to Tulsa and lived with his dad (Dick Hamil) for about six months then bought a house on Independence Street in Tulsa.
We wanted to move the kids to the country and found property (10 acres) in Oologah, OK. We worked and built our home there as we could afford it. We finally sold the house in Tulsa.
I worked at a small business that made switches for pacemakers. I worked with a lady whose daughter was head of personnel at First National Bank of Tulsa. She hired me and I started out in the proof department at the bank. Use to be the amount you wrote your check for was encoded by a proof machine that an operator would key in the amount and that would put the amount in magnetic ink on the bottom of the check for the computer to read. I worked at First of Tulsa for eleven years and my final job there was in the investment department, where we sold stocks and bonds.
Rod was working for McDonald Douglas as a machinist and made a whopping $3.25 an hour, which in 1968 was food money. His final employment was at Terra Industries which changed ownership several times before he retired.
