Local teacher and coach, Joe Andrew Mitchell, left his earthly home in Collinsville on April 23, 2024, to enter his heavenly home. Born on July 12, 1947, to Helen Jo (Torbett) and I.K. Mitchell, he attended Collinsville schools and was a proud graduate of Collinsville High School Class of 1965. In 1966, Joe and Carol Jean (Henshall) Mitchell were married. They welcomed children Jeannie Lynn (1967) and Joel Kevin (1973).
After graduating from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Joe received his Master’s degree in Geography from NSU. His teaching career in social studies was in Commerce, Collinsville, Hominy, and Rejoice Christian Schools. His beloved basketball, along with track, football, and girls’ softball were among the sports he coached at these schools.
Raised in the lumber business, Joe worked at building and construction projects his entire life. Osage Log Homes was founded and operated by him for 19 years. Through this company he traveled to other states and countries.
Joe enjoyed being called “Geography Joe,” and he vacationed to numerous regions. Adventures began taking Jeannie and Joel camping in tents, to pop-up campers, and eventually Motel 6. Glacier National Park, Louisiana swamps, Grand Canyon, nearby states and most recently Alaska were highlights. In later years, camping ventures in his own camper were especially enjoyed at Hawthorne Bluff, Camp sit #32. Joe loved campfires and fishing with new friends.
His life-long hobby of fishing was experienced at ponds and lakes for seven decades. Joe always had a boat. His hobbies included walking dogs at city park and camping trails, following politics and supporting his favorite candidates. Joe was always patriotic. He was passionate about Meadowcreek United Methodist Church, Ward-Wiseman Animal Haven and Critters at the Creek.
