She attended Talala schools through the 11th grade at which time she married Lloyd Wood on October 19, 1941. She promised her dad she would finish school if he would let her get married. He reluctantly agreed. She did finish, graduating at the top of her class at Collinsville High School.
She and Lloyd moved to Collinsville in 1946. They built the house they called home together until Lloyd’s passing in 2000. Gracie continued living in their home until her death. They welcomed three children into their lives: Tommy, Gary and Sherri.
Gracie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Collinsville for many years. In her younger years she taught a Sunday School class and helped with Vacation Bible School. She always loved and enjoyed working with children.
She worked as secretary for Horton’s Electric Company for 22 years. She never learned to drive a car, so she walked to work every day all those years.
After her retirement, she became active in Collinsville Senior Citizens as a secretary/treasurer until she was 94. She always enjoyed the fellowship and games with fellow seniors, who became close friends. She loved working crossword puzzles, word find, playing card games and dominoes. She had a strong desire to reach 100 years of age. Although she didn’t quite make it, she lived a long happy life.
Gracie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Tommy and Gary, grandsons, Bobby Wood and Travis Bacon, one great-grandson, Cory Wood, brother, John (Jack) Huber, sisters, Ruby Huber, Dorothy Jacobs, Delphine Aday, Margie St John.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherri (Wood) Bacon, 3 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Betty McClain and Ruth Garrett, many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
