After high school, he married Mary Ann Flaming of Corn, Oklahoma.  They moved to Detroit Michigan where he served in a hospital there as part of 1W-Alternative Service during the Korean Conflict.  Following his two-year service in Detroit, they moved to California where he worked on a large farming operation.  His two sons, Rick and Ron where born while in California.  In 1968 he moved the family back to Oklahoma to farm in partnership with his cousin Bob Gossen. Soon after he began his own farming operation.  His first wife, Mary Ann, passed away in 1991, and in 1999 he married Marilyn Cooley.  They celebrated their 20 th anniversary earlier this year.  Ernie was a farmer and served on the Collinsville Coop Board of Directors for a time. As with many farmers, he supplemented his income with off-farm work.  He was proficient in several trades, including carpentry, electrical, as well as heating & air, and took on many construction and remodel projects.  After he retired from farming, he worked for Lowrance Electronics, and Broken Arrow Public Schools, where he did maintenance and carpentry.  He was a longtime member of Westport Mennonite Brethren Church, where he served as a Deacon.  He later became a member of Friendship Baptist Church.  Ernie enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.  He put those skills to good use, participating on Disaster Relief teams, and on mission trips to Kentucky to help the less fortunate, as well as helping many widows of the church with home repair projects.
